Absolute Heaven Golden Temple, Amritsar on Diwali image is photoshopped

Just like every year, this Diwali also a lot of people saw a stunning image of the Golden Temple in Amritsar. It is a famous temple not only in India but also all over the world. It was seen illuminated by nearly thousands of sky lanterns. The photo went viral on social media and messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram as well. It was claimed that the temple was lit up on the occasion of Diwali. However, the truth seems a bit disappointing, it was a Photoshopped image and was a fake one.

This picture was posted by one of the many tweeter user, Jaspreet Singh with handle (@JaspreetBJP). He posted it with the caption,

“Absolute Heaven🌹Golden Temple, Amritsar. No fireworks but lanterns in the sky reflected in the sarovar surrounding the Gurudwara @hvgoenka”

Here we can see the Photoshopped snap which went vial and fooled many people into believing there were sky lanterns up in the sky on Diwali eve.

The above picture received nearly thousand retweet and nearly 4K likes on twitter. The same image was also shared on other social media platforms with different captions. Chances are pretty decent that you also came across this picture.

Fact Check

In reality, two images were merged. The one image was taken as the Sikh devotees paid their respect at the Golden Temple in Amritsar on the evening before of Bandi Chhor Divas or Diwali. They celebrate this occasion to mark the return of their 6th Guru, Guru Hargobind Ji.  Guru Hargobind Ji was liberated from captivity along with 52 political prisoners from Gwalior fort by the Mughal Emperor Jahangir. Lanterns image can be seen here, it’s been merged with above image.

In the above image, you can see the difference between the original and the photoshopped image. In the original one, you can see a huge crowd that has gathered but there is no lighting in the sky. In the edited image, there are sky lanterns which seems pretty real in one look. Rest the image look same, only lanterns are the fabricated part.

The image was created by a tweeter user Navkaran Brar (@BrarNavkaran). He took the responsibility of creating this image and also said that his intention was not of misleading or fooling people. He mentioned this in his tweet.
